Brand New Cat
I got myself a brand new cat,
a teeny-tiny kitten.
She’s smaller than your average cat.
She fits inside a mitten.
I’m so in love with my new cat,
it’s fair to say I’m smitten.
I’m also scratched and scraped and scarred
and sliced and slashed and bitten.

About This Poem
I wrote “Brand New Cat” because I love my cat very much, even though he scratches me a lot. Sometimes, having a new kitten can be a little tough because they have sharp claws and like to play a bit too rough. But no matter how many scratches I get, I’m still very happy to have my furry friend.
This poem has a ABCBDBEB rhyme scheme, meaning that every other line rhymes (kitten, mitten, smitten, bitten).
This poem uses a fun poetic technique called alliteration. That means it repeats the same sound at the beginning of words that are close together, like “scratched and scraped and scarred” and “sliced and slashed.” Alliteration helps make the poem sound more playful and musical. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!
