Annette the Detective

This Context Clues worksheet features the humorous poem “Annette the Detective,” ideal for students in grades 3–5. The poem tells the story of a well-meaning but hilariously incompetent detective who can’t follow clues, recognize patterns, or even find a missing cat. After reading, students are asked to identify unfamiliar words from the poem and use context clues to figure out their meanings. This activity strengthens vocabulary, promotes close reading, and builds critical thinking skills—all while keeping students engaged with a funny and relatable character who’s not quite cut out for detective work.
