Today I Ran a Single Step
Today I ran a single step.
Tomorrow I’ll run two.
Then three, then four, then even more.
Each day, that’s what I’ll do.
I’m training for a marathon.
It may take quite a while.
In fact, it could be years before
I even run a mile.
Though you might find my plan bizarre,
and think it’s not a strong one,
if I just do it step by step
I’ll finish in the long run.

About This Poem
One day recently, I overheard someone use a common phrase, and I realized that it wasn’t just a figure of speech—it could also be taken literally. I thought it might make a fun idea for a poem, so I quickly pulled out my phone and jotted it down before I could forget. A few days later, when I looked back at my notes, I still liked the idea, so I sat down and finished writing the poem.
I’ve also always wondered what would happen if you started with a simple exercise—like doing one push-up on the first day, then two on the second, then three on the third—and just kept adding one more each day. Would you eventually be able to do a thousand push-ups in a row? Maybe this poem has the answer! I hope you have as much fun reading it as I had writing it.
