Some Kids
Some kids are messy and
some kids are clean.
Some kids are muscular.
Some kids are lean.
Some kids have black hair, and
some dye theirs green.
And all of them go to my school.
Some kids are athletes and
some kids are nerds.
Some kids like numbers, while
some prefer words.
Some kids are loners and
some move in herds.
We’re different, and that makes us cool.
Some kids don’t play till
their homework is done.
Some kids would rather watch
movies for fun.
Some like the indoors, while
some like the sun.

About This Poem
Many of the most successful adults started out as kids who were seen as a little different or even weird. But often, it’s those very differences that led to their greatest successes. I wrote this poem to celebrate the many ways in which we are all unique. Each of us has our own likes, dislikes, strengths, and styles, and that’s what makes life interesting! In “Some Kids,” I wanted to capture the diversity of kids in a school—different personalities, appearances, and interests—and show how our differences make us who we are.
Embracing what makes us unique can open up exciting paths in life. So, this poem is also a reminder that being yourself is something to be proud of, and that together, our individuality is what makes us cool.
