My Hat Is Full of Rabbits
A Funny Magic Poem for Kids
From the book My Cat Knows Karate
My hat is full of rabbits.
My cape is full of doves.
A playing card is up my sleeve,
and some are in my gloves.
A wand is in my pocket
with handkerchiefs and flowers.
My coat has things like ropes and rings
with mystifying powers.
I have my staff and juggling clubs,
my mirrors, cups, and dice,
my crystal ball, my smoke machine,
and fancy dancing mice.
I’m ready for my magic show.
There’s just one problem here…
My elephant is on my lap
and will not disappear.

About This Poem
When I was a kid, I wanted to be a magician. In kindergarten, I bought a special kit with several magic tricks -- magic cups, rings, and so on -- and brought it to school for show and tell. When I was seven, I even got a top hat and cape so I could perform a magic show for my family. When I got a little older, I even learned a few card tricks. Unfortunately, I wasn't very good at performing any of these tricks, and the audience always figured out how I did them, so I gave up my dream of performing feats of magic. But I always enjoyed watching magicians who could fool me, and I remember how much fun it was to think about learning to do magic myself, so now I sometimes write poems about magic tricks, like this one.
