Write a Triolet

This worksheet introduces students to the triolet, a structured eight-line poem with specific rhyme and repetition patterns. It begins with a clear definition of a triolet and outlines the rules for creating one, detailing the rhyme scheme (ABaAabAB) and the repetition of lines 1, 4, and 7, as well as lines 2 and 8. The worksheet also explains that triolets can cover a wide range of topics, from nature to emotions to imaginative subjects.

An example triolet, “Bees of Winter” by Laura Purdie Salas, is provided to demonstrate the form in practice. This example helps students visualize how the rhyme scheme and repetition work together to create a cohesive poem. Students are then given a structured space to compose their own triolet, with each line labeled according to the rhyme scheme.

This exercise enhances several skills, including understanding complex poetic forms, rhyme creation, and the strategic use of repetition in poetry. By crafting their own triolets, students learn to work within a challenging structure, paying close attention to word choice, rhythm, and thematic development. This activity also encourages students to think creatively about how to use repeated lines effectively, fostering both their analytical and creative writing abilities.
