Not-So Fast Food
A Funny Food Poem for Kids
From the book My Cat Knows Karate
Burgers, pizzas, chicken wings.
Tacos, French fries, onion rings.
Ice cream, donuts, cookies, cakes.
Soda, chips, and chocolate shakes.
These are things I like to munch,
breakfast, dinner, snack and lunch.
Every meal I eat includes
more, and more, and more fast foods.
Yet with every meal I eat
I grow slower on my feet.
This is why I want to know
why does fast food make me slow?

About This Poem
Sometimes kids will ask my what my favorite subject is to write about. Without hesitation, I tell them "food." I love food. I love to cook and I love to eat. So of course I like to write poems about cooking and eating too. However, I pretty much don't eat fast food anymore. It's not that I don't like it. There's not much that's tastier than a burger with fries and a chocolate shake or a pizza and a soda. But I also notice that I tend to have more energy when I eat healthier foods. Whenever I eat spaghetti for lunch, all I want to do is take a nap in the afternoon. Which made me realize that fast food makes you slow, while slow food (meaning healthy, well-prepared foods with lots of vegetables) tends to give you more energy, even though it might not taste as good. Slow food might even make you lighter and faster.
