My Mother Took Me to the Mall
From the book My Dog Likes to Disco
My mother took me to the mall
to visit Old Saint Nick.
She wanted me upon his knee
to snap our yearly pic.
We do it every Christmas but,
this year, I changed my mind.
I thought I’d like a photo
of a slightly different kind.
I didn’t sit on Santa’s lap
or climb up on his chair
despite the fact that Santa was
the reason we were there.
Instead, I grabbed my mother’s phone
and ran up to an elf
and snapped a photograph
with Santa’s helper and myself.
My mother looked confused
but I just grinned from ear to ear
and said, “I took an elfie
for my Christmas pic this year.”
