I Like It When It’s Quiet
From the book The Elephant Repairman
I like it when it’s quiet;
when no one says a word.
I’m happy when there’s not
a single sound that can be heard.
I love it when it’s silent,
and peaceful as a dream.
Whenever it gets noisy,
it makes me want to scream.
It makes me want to holler.
It makes me want to shout.
It makes me want to screech and shriek
and huff and puff and pout.
It makes me want to rant and rave.
It makes me want to roar.
It makes me want to yowl and howl
and hammer on the floor.
And so I throw a tantrum
and I yell and run around
until it’s peaceful as a dream
and no one makes a sound.
