I Can’t Believe It’s Christmas Eve
From the book A Festival for Frogs
I can’t believe it’s Christmas Eve
and everyone’s awake
because, today, I’m sad to say,
we made a big mistake.
We went to bed but, then, instead
of slumbering and dreaming,
we woke in fear, surprised to hear
the sound of Santa screaming.
And what a scare to see him there!
His Santa suit was smoking.
His Christmas sack and hat were black.
He coughed like he was choking.
He hit the ground and rolled around
until the fire was out,
then looked at us in mild disgust
and gave a little pout.
We felt so sad to see him mad.
It seems we were to blame.
And Santa Claus was mad because
his suit went up in flame.
The lesson here is pretty clear
and all of us are learning
on Christmas Eve you shouldn’t leave
the Christmas Yule log burning.
