Dad in the Sand
From the book A Festival for Frogs
I buried my dad at
the beach in the sand.
He asked for my help so
I gave him a hand.
He wanted a way to
stay out of the sun,
and told me he thought that
it sounded like fun.
I kind of forgot where
I buried him, though.
I hope I can find him.
Mom’s ready to go.

About This Poem
I wrote this poem in the middle of November. Although winter doesn’t start until December, there was already snow on the ground. It was very cold outside, and I was having trouble staying warm even in the house, so I thought maybe writing a poem about a warm day at the beach might help.
I also realized that, while it was nearly winter where I live, that meant that it was almost summer in South Africa, Australia, and other places south of the equator. So I though it might be nice to post a summer poem for my friends in the southern hemisphere.
Whether it’s cold and snowy or sunny and hot where you live right now, I hope you enjoy this new poem.
