The Fisherman and His Wife

Once upon a time there was
a man who caught a fish
that begged to be released
and in exchange would grant a wish.

“A talking fish?” the man exclaimed,
“Of course I’ll set you free!
And in return I hope you’ll
grant this single wish for me.”

The man went home and told his wife
he’d caught a talking fish,
explaining how he let it go
and got his fondest wish.

He said, “I got the one thing
that I’ve wanted all my life.”
She asked him, “What?” And he replied,
“I wished I had a wife.”
